Guðjón Ketilsson is a contemporary artist based in Reykjavik, Iceland. In his works, he is mainly occupied with drawings and sculpture. His sculptural work integrates a range of intersecting formal, spatial, material and art historical interests.
His study of the human condition is mostly through its primary vehicle, the body and how, through its absence and presence, time, memory and history can be explored.
In his recent works, Ketilsson explores language, writing and drawing as cognitive tools, direct extensions and testimonials of our thinking processes.

Short Bio
In his over forty-year career, Ketilsson has held over thirty solo shows and participated in numerous group-shows, in Iceland and in Europe, USA, China and Australia, such as at The Katonah Museum of Art in Katonah, New York, The North Dakota Museum of Art, USA, International Print Center in New York, Site-ations International in Zaragoza, Spain, Plads Artspace in Aarhus, Denmark and Luise Ross Gallery in New York.
His works belong to collections of all art museums in Iceland, as well as to art museums in Europe and in the US, including the collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
Ketilsson has participated in numerous international workshops and some of his commissioned art works can be seen in public space outdoors in Reykjavik and Seydisfjordur in Iceland, and in the Nordic countries.
In 2020 Ketilsson received the Icelandic Visual Art Prize, The Cultural Prize of DV in 2000 and the Museum of Einar Jonsson Prize in 1998, all of them in Iceland.
Guðjón Ketilsson studied art at the Icelandic College of Art and Crafts and did his extended studies at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, Canada with artist Dara Birnbaum as professor.

Um verkið
Verkið er unnið sérstaklega fyrir Multis og ber titilinn Logn. Skúlptúrinn er 10 x 15 cm. að stærð, samsettur úr tveimur einingum sem steyptar eru í svartan steinleir og festar á vegg.
Verkið er gert í fimm árituðum eintökum. Bakgrunnur Guðjóns Ketilssonar í myndlist á rætur sínar í hugmyndalist og það er honum mikilvægt að endurnýja sífellt vinnuaðferðir sínar í listinni og finna nýjar leiðir til sköpunar. Þannig er þetta verk afsprengi nýlegrar vinnu hans með brenndan leir.
Fjall úr steinleir; í því felst nokkurskonar endurgjöf til náttúrunnar. Samhverfa fjallsins við spegilmynd sína skapar landslag innra með okkur, form sem er handan hins snertanlega, á stefnumóti heiðs himins við spegilslétt vatn.

The work
Ketilsson´s relief sculpture is titled Calm Sea and is made especially for Multis. The 10 x 15 cm. work is composed of two units cast in black stone clay and is to be hung on a wall. It is made in an edition of 5, signed by the artist.
Ketilsson´s artistic background lies in conceptual art and it is important for him to constantly re-identify himself as an artist; using various materials and methods of creation, but always exploring his concepts through craftmanship.
Thus, this work is an offspring of other recent works where he uses fired clay. One could say that casting a mountain form, from stone clay is a re-gift to nature.
The symmetry of the mountain with its reflected form, the reflection becomes our inner landscape, a form that is beyond the tangible, between clear sky and the calm sea.
